Re: Windows Update not easy, please fix

Listed below are my messages that I wrote while reading in the newsgroup
looking for information in order to fix this myself.

Written on 6-16-06,

I tried installing Windows Update on my Windows XP SP2 and it fails
everytime. I tried using Update to install Critical Downloads and it failed
on all 10 downloads. At this point I have spent enough time trying. I turned
off my antivirus and security shields prior to downloads. I quit for now.
This is too time consuming.

In another post same day:

I'm having the same problem. I have a 2+ Year old Gateway. I know my disk is
valid. Error Code: 0x80200010. 10 critical downloads failed twice. I turned
off my antivirus and security shield and have Popups "okay". Now what?

Response to Robin Walker (MVP) on 6-16-06, same day:
Robin Walker asked about my Antivirus software.

No, I am using Freedom antivirus software by Zero Knowledge supplied with
Adelphia Internet Service. I had turned off the antivirus software before
trying to update.

Response also on 6-16-06:

This is just too hard now to update my Windows XP with Windows Update. It
isn't working. 10 critical downloads were all uninstalled. It's time
consuming and hard to figure out what to try next. I have turned off my
antivirus program and security shield to try to do this. I have made sure
that popups weren't a problem as much as I can. I have been unsuccessful
today doing this. All the links are confusing and not easy to do. This needs
to be fixed for all the people trying to maintain their computers in the best
way. I have 2 computers and have only tried to update one at this point. Mine
is a Gateway and the other is a Dell. Both are 2.5 and 1 year old
respectively. Both have valid Windows XP programs.

Now, Mr. Paton: In the first message I mentioned I has Windows XP SP2. I
also reported only one error message on the messages I posted starting
6-16-06. That error message was 0x80200010 not a "number of them". My
firewall is Freedom software supplied by Adelphia.net, my ISP. I had turned
off my antivirus and firewall prior to attempting to download these progams.
I have no other antivirus software installed on my computer.

The information you so generously supplied will be looked into and it looks
like it's in such detail I will just work on it shortly. However, I did not
think that I barged into any conversations. I was reading and contributing
(talking on subject). I did not know there was a specific protocol on this
bulletinboard/newsgroup. I've used many bulletinboard/newsgroups for years,
since this whole internet was a baby. It has evolved so much it's fun to
remember the "old times". I actually thought it was better to try to converse
within already framed conversations rather than post yet another topic.
However, here on this newsgroup I have learned a valuable lesson. I won't
barge in no matter what, I won't post, I'll j ust wait until the answer comes
up, and I will try to figure out what data you all need before I do post
should it become necessary. Had I known all the commands you gave me and
about the BG_E_NETWORK_DISCONNECTED thing,

regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe atl.dll
regsvr32.exe wintrust.dll

and all the other things you mentioned here in this message I guess I
wouldn't have needed help. I'm so sorry to have inconvenienced people here
but I needed answers.

I am 61 years old, a grandmother and I think I'm doing pretty good with
computers. I have had a design service for lettering Race Cars and 16 wheel
trucks, I've worked with designing for many things, I work with Photography,
I just try to learn as much as I can to take care of my computer since it's
my road to creating things.
Thank you for your help,

You seem to have posted rather a lot of threads (which would not endear you
to many regulars!) recently?

Your thread of 16th June (Update fails) was not very informative, either...
which is probably why you got no response (apart from the fact that you
tacked it onto someone else's thread - never a good idea!)

Your thread of 16th June (0x80070643 for Microsoft .NET framework 1.1
service pack 1)
was totally uninformative also!

Again - on 17th June - you barged into another thread (Windows Genuine
Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) FAILED IN) - with no data.

and today you come in here with no real data - and expect a solution.......

OK - I'll try, but this is working from a VERY poor data base!!

1) SO far, in all threads that I've seen you failed to mention one VERY
important factor - your Operating System!! (version of Windows) - I'll have
to assume that it's Windows XP... and probably SP1, rather than SP2

2) You've referenced a number of error messages.... 0x80200010 would seem
to be the current problem??

3) this error message would appear to result from an apparently missing
network connection - what firewall are you using? (if any???) Do you have
Norton software installed??

Assuming that, then I suggest that you try the following first
Go to Start|Run, and type in the following commands - end each with OK, or
Enter

regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe atl.dll
regsvr32.exe wintrust.dll

reboot the machine and try again

3) What Anti-Virus are you using??
the error message actually means....
<quote Taurarian>
BG_E_NETWORK_DISCONNECTED
0x80200010
The network card is inactive or disconnected. All jobs are placed in the
BG_JOB_STATE_TRANSIENT_ERROR state
If you're not running Panda anti virus, check your device manager.

If you have Panda, have you ran the hotfixes?
For the conflict between windows update and Panda anti-virus Titanium 2005
the hotfix is: hfT50504s8.exe
and you can find it here:

For Panda Platinum 2005, and you get 0x80200010 , go to:

Again, reboot, and try Windows Updates again

You should also check your Services are running properly!

<quote Maurice N>
From Start menu, select RUN, then type in

services.msc <Enter-key>

Here are the services & their Startup types:

Background Intelligent Transfer Service(BITS) Manual
Cryptographic Services Automatic
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Automatic
System Restore Service Automatic

Bring up Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options/ select VIEW Tab and
look at all of settings listed.

"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.

Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden
files and folders.
Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.
Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.

Use Windows Explorer. Go to C:\Windows\System32

If you have a sub-folder called * Catroot2 * (not Catroot) rename the
folder to CR2OLD. Or delete everything in that folder. Just make sure you
do the right one.

(to clean up downloaded files for Automatic updates / Windows Update)
From main Windows Start menu, select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter-key>

type in
net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>

Go to Windows Explorer.
Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder name.
Like Windows or WINNT.
Modify following as appropriate.
If your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are
stored from W U downloads.

Go back to Command prompt window.
type in
net start wuauserv <Enter-key>

EXIT <Enter-key>

Check your Event Viewer (Start|Run, type EVENTVWR.MSC and click OK) - what
errors is it throwing up??

Noel, below you will see a message I wrote earlier this week regarding
this
situation. It seems many people are having similar or same problems. What
If
upi type in "Oceana Rose" in the Search For Box you will see my messages
this
week. Now you will probably not want to do that because it means you have
to
go "here and there" to read all the things I wrote, but that's exactly why
I'm not happy with this problem. I'm tired of going " here and there"
because
it should be easier than this. It should just plain work.

What was the EXACT error message?
How did you attempt to install the patches? - did they download OK, but
refuse to install, or did they not download??
