SOLUTION!
Per phone with MS tech support:
first, go to http://snipurl.com/8BQY and redownload the patch to your desktop.
Next, put your computer in Safe Mode by rebooting and selecting F8 when
prompted to enter system configuration. Select boot in Safe Mode, go to the
desktop and doubleclick the downloaded file. No more problem with the patch,
but be prepared to be inundated with about 25 patch updates that will be
requested when you reboot after the install. Now I am working on getting my
Firewall to enable again and Windows OneCare to work. This is a real pain.

Try emailing MS again. I have contacted them two times in the last couple of.
days regarding a failure to install and within 24 hours I received a very
helpful response...very on top of it. Maybe your email got lost in
cyberspace with all of the floaters! N

Just to commiserate with you, I am having exactly the same problem, and MS
Tech Support has thus far ignored my emails using their online request for
help.
I have tried closing all possible programs and processes without success. My
thinking is to install it from a Command prompt in dos, but XP derails that
idea. The event viewer shows numerous errors involving this problem, but no
solution.

Did Anyone ever come up with a solution for this thread? Mine is associated
with smss.exe in windows system directory being open or in use by another
file. I disabled all startup programs and still have not luck since it
states it is a critial windows file and runs in the background.

Well, I've pretty much exhausted every idea I could come up with short of
reinstallin the OS and the whole server.

It's possible. I am running TS Server in Administration mode on the box
also. I've got a few things more to try, hopefully one of us finds the
answer.

I am currently working on this with MS TS. So far no luck.
One thing that I see is that my server is running Terminal Server and yours
is running Citrix. I wonder if that somehow is connected to the problem?

I am also having this error when trying to install it off the Windows Update
website. When I try to run the update localy, I get "The file
c:\winnt\system32\dllcache\msiexec.exe is open or in use by another
application. Close all other applications and then click Retry."
I'm running Win2k Server SP4 with Citrix MetaFrame. I have shutdown all
apps and services that are not needed and still I get these errors.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,

When we try to install windows update 3.1, it downloads fine, but I get the
following error when it tries to install.
"Installation Failure
Error Code: 0x8007054F
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following
resources. "
OS=Windows 2000 SP4
Thanks,
Jim
