Key problems (unchanged after several reboots):
1. Can't use Windows Update.
In detail, this is what happens:
I go to this page in IE (doesn't work in my default Firefox browser)
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
That actually takes me to this page
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
That looks as if it doesn't recognise I have just updated to SP2,
because it has the same appearance as under SP1. i.e. offering
Express. But anyway, *whatever* link I click I get the error "Files
required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer." If I use Continue, it *seems* to be downloading/
registering/installing. But it finishes with an empty main window. And
if I click an option on the left, such as Review your update history,
I get the error message again. Same closed loop arises if I go down
the new Microsoft Update route.
2. Very slow Explorer; e.g. TWO mins to open My Computer!
3. My Network Connections folder is empty. (Yet my Wireless router is
connecting me Ok to my internet broadband connection).
4. I'm getting weird messages in Event Viewer. They are
incomprehensible to me, but here are two of them in case some expert
here can interpret them for me:
The run-time environment has detected an inconsistency in its internal
state. This indicates a potential instability in the process that
could be caused by the custom components running in the COM+
application, the components they make use of, or other factors. Error
in d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\comsvcs\events\lcedisp.cpp(131), hr =
80040206: Failed to CoCreate EventSystem object.

The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal
processing. HRESULT was 80040154 from line 44 of
d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. This may
indicate that the COM+ Event System is not properly installed. Please
try reinstalling the COM+ Event System.
Any help would be much appreciated please, as I have been working on
this for most of the day so far without any success with any of the
above issues.

Thanks, but no, as that would be the same as uninstalling SP2!
And then you could clean up your computer, remember to disable your AV
first, not have any peripherals connected other than you monitor,
keyboard and mouse, and install SP2. Although, with your situation, it
may be faster and surer to back up your data, do a clean install and
then install SP2 and then all the updates.
