Download Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8
Service Pack 1 (KB911562) from here :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=7358DA31-959C-4E3E-8115-51DC6D441365&displaylang=en

Save it to the Hard Drive, do NOT run it. Close IE and then install it.
That should stop the repeated prompt to update MDAC.

Windows Automatic Update is driving me crazy over its repeated
inability to install this security update on a P4 Windows 2000 PC:

"Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.5 Service Pack
3 (KB911562)", (hereinafter the "Update").

It has been happening for weeks. Today I decided to troubleshoot this
problem extensively for the fourth time. This is what happened.

1. When I turned the PC on there was a notification in the System Tray
telling me "Updates are ready for your computer.....Click here to
download." I clicked.

2. The "Automatic Updates" window appeared telling me to "Choose
updates to download." Only one item was shown in the window. It was
the Update. I clicked on Download.

3. The window disappeared. There was another notification in the
System Tray: "Updates are ready for your computer.....Click here to
install these updates." Again I clicked.

4. "Automatic Update" popped up asking me how I wanted to install the
Update. I selected Express and clicked on "Install."

5. A window popped up stating "The updates are being installed." Then
this message appeared in the Update.exe window: "A recently applied
update, KB911652, failed to install." I clicked on "Send Error Report."

6. The Error Reporting window popped up saying "Get more information
about preventing this problem in the future." I clicked on it.

7. A window appeared telling me that "A solution is available: follow
the instructions in the Knowledge Base article"....., then "The error
was likely caused by running a patch for a different version of MDAC
than the version actually installed".....and "Click on the link under
Additional Technical Information below." I clicked on "Watson Dialog
Appears when patching MDAC."

8. Next I read "Article ID:916850.....April 11, 2006.....Revision 1.".....
followed by "You are prompted to send an a report to Microsoft when you try
to apply a MDAC software update."

This list followed:

SYSTEMS
RESOLUTION
Windows 2000
etc.
etc.

Under Windows 2000 this list followed:

MDAC 2.5 Service Pack 3 (SP3) MDAC253-
MDAC 2.7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) MDAC271-
MDAC 2.8 MDAC28-
MDAC 2.8 Service Pack 1 (SP1) MDAC281-

Of course, I recognized the first entry as the Update. Going back to
the RESOLUTION caption, there was this: "To resolve this issue, apply
he correct software for the version of MDAC that actually is running on
the computer." I clicked on the link that followed.

9. This got me to: "MDAC Utility: Component Checker" which read:
"Component Checker has been redesigned to provide you with XML support
for MDAC 2.7 SP1 on Windows XP SP1 and MDAC 2.8 on Windows Server 2003.
I clicked on Download.

10. The file download window appeared with the usual options. I chose
Open. The program ran.

11. The "Component Checker" window reported that "the following product
releases were matched".....MDAC 2.5 SP3. I chose the option to
"Perform analysis of a selected version." I selected MDAC 2.5 SP3. A
long list of files appeared that only confused me.

12. All of this seemed to take me back to where I started, without the
patch being installed.

13. I gave up at this point and started typing this message.

I believe that this is a critical update and I would like to install it.

Can someone straighten me out on this?
