Re: (3). Re: failed update. ERUNT ver. 1.1 (BackUp Registry)???

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

There is NO registry repair tool on the XP CD. The reason I recommended ERUNT is that XP does not make a complete backup of the entire registry.
You can follow these "Back up the whole registry" steps instead, if so desired :

How to back up, edit, and restore the registry in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003

OR, if you're feeling lucky, try this tool :

Well, your instructions may seem easy for the Computer-Geek Guru but looking over your info is very confusing on where/which directions to follow regarding my problem. POSSIBLY with my Registry. Can't I just insert my ORIGINAL WINXP PRO (SP2) Disk to do a REGISTRY RECOVER instead of going to ERUNT? Isn't that the SAME THING?

When I install my WINXP PRO CD it asks me for installation but I need to BYPASS this and go to REGISTRY REPAIR. HOW do I get to that on the CD? Even if I go to "Browse CD" where do I find REGISTRY REPAIR or something similar to that?

Thanks !
Bill :)

I have a DISK that's called WINDOWS REGISTRY REPAIR PRO (with WINDOWS Clean-UP Pro)....would this do the same thing?

* Maybe if I run this disk it'll fix my problem????
Thanks!

Don't bet on any 3rd party software having a "miracle cure", Bill. Suggest you print out that page I linked you to as the first step.
Then back up the registry with ERUNT ver. 1.1 :
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/
It makes a complete backup of the registry. Instructions for it's use can be reached from the link on the above page or from here :
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/erunt.txt

The steps are not that hard to follow if you print out the page and just follow them one at a time.

Well, this is great info. I did the 1st part you mentioned and it was OK there but the 2nd part about backing-up my registry before I did the 2nd part....HOW do I back up my registry?

The information you gave me I think requires PHONE TECH support because it's hard to read your info and work on the computer stuff at the same time when I have (2) windows open and going back and forth is a mess! :(

All I want to know is HOW I get my WINDOWS UPDATES to perform like they should. I've emailed WINDOWS TECH SUPPORT and waiting for their answer. For the type of issue I have would take about 30 min. BY PHONE but IF I have to go through all this email and list of directions....would take me over 1 hr. to even understand the basics.

Perhaps you can help me on this????

BITS has most likely been damaged by Norton.

YES, I'm having the SAME problem with my WINDOWS XP Professional (and Office 2003) updates. I "had" Norton SystemWorks/Norton Internet Security 2005 and what a pain in the ASS this Anti-Virus program was! Piece of GARBAGE! I had to uninstall NSW/NIS 2005, Delete any/all NSW/NIS 2005 from my Registry keys and do a reboot and Norton Symantec's "CUSTOMER SUPPORT" is GARBAGE and you'd be lucky if you can get someone who SPEAKS ENGLISH!!! VERY POOR, POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE and I will NEVER use Norton (anything) on my cmptr. Norton changes your registry keys in the Windows Operating System and it's not supposed to! I'm using a different AV Software and it works MUCH better with no problems either!

ANYWAY....HOW can I fix my update problems without all of them failing? I have a HISTORY LOG of FAILED updates I need to fix and there's GOT to be SOME relief. Hopefully you have the answer?

Thanks!
Bill H. :)

Hi I had the same problem, among other problems with my laptop. I uninstalled my antivirus software in control panel - add/remove progams (it was Norton Symantec) and replaced it with different antivirus software (Sophos) and lo and behold all my problems were gone! The updates finally downloaded. So perhaps some antivirus software is incompatible with downloading updates. I hope this will help you!
