What is allocating your TCP/IP address ... or rather what should be
allocating your TCP/IP address. When you do get one, what is it (just the
first few digits will do)

Hello,
I upgraded (not fresh install) my home desktop from WinME to WinXP and
since
then I am unable to connect to internet. I am connecting via LAN using
cable
modem. It has been working fine before upgrade but am unable to connect
since
upgrade. Here is my desktop info:
Compaq Presario S5005
Pentinum III 933 MHz
256 RAM
60 Gb Hard drive
My network card is "SMC EZ 10/100 SMC1211TX".
I have checked everything. Network connection is enabled and XP says
working. I am able to get IP address (tried ipconfig). It shows me a valid
IP
address. I am unable to do "ipconfig /renew", it syas unable to renew IP
address. I am unable to connect to net via IE. I have checked all IE
settings
and everything looks fine.
I have even tried to disable the LAN connection and re-enabled it with no
luck.
Can somebody pl. help me figure out where should I start? How to diagnose
and fix the problem? Any comments, suggestions or pointers will be much
appreciated.
Regards
Shail
