Open Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Check to see how many versions of Sun java are installed ( The 1.4.x_xx versions will be listed as JRE Runtime. The l.5.x_xx versions will be listed as J2SE Runtime ) The latest version is 1.5.1_06.
Uninstall all or any version prior to that one using Add/Remove Programs. Then visit Sun and obtain the latest version:

Put a mark in the Accept License Agreement circle, then download the
Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language package.
Save it, do NOT run it while IE is open.
Close IE, install it.
Revisit Windows Update to see if that resolves the issue.
