Re: XP downloads Error messages - Fail to load?

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Hi Mr N.,

Thanks for the guidence!

I did the WinVer and yes SP2 is in the text.

Thanks, that was a fast and easy verification method.

I am able to get the "red x" listings on all 45 uninstalled items. when
I visit the update site too.

I've cleared the off-line and temp files using hardware tools clean up.

I also noticed last night, that the activated update on XP attemped to
download all 45 items duing shutdown. I double check with update and
got the same fail to install updates message, the next day.

I will go read the KB regarding update log interpetations.

Here's the end of the log:

Slow down a bit before you consider "wiping" the current installation of Windows.

Does this XP system (a) already have XP service pack 2, or (b) not?

From Start menu button, select RUN option. Then type in

winver <press Enter-key>

There will be a long display of Version number
what does your Windows Version & build show as ? (that l-o-n-g string Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)

Does the build string show service pack 1 or service pack 2?

I suggest you review the windows update log file and see what it contains for the last session.
Use Notepad or Wordpad and take a look at (usually C:\WINNT or \Windows )
%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

Scan down to the bottom. Review contents.
You need to look for entries marked "Error" such as 0x......... (where ...... are numbers)

See KB 902093 How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

Also, just to get the Error from update history:
Go back to Windows Update, but then select View update history. (When you first get to website for Microsoft Update-Windows Update, look at left-hand column, under Options. Press "Review your update history".)
If this is on V6 of Windows Update, you should be able to click on that error note (the red X), and see some info.

Thanks Robin from across the pond!

I'll give it a try.

I think, I did something to rile XP, I only had one account and XP started
telling me that I needed admin rights to access help files. So I created
another account and still couldn't gain access.

It maybe time to wipe, reformat and reinstall?

But thanks for the tip, to fix this problem.

I tried MS update for XP HE SP2, I got to the point were MS attempts
to download the updates and after that, my system attempts to open the
downloaded updates.

That's when I get a message stating," the system failed to
successfully open the updates".

Check that you are logged on with Administrator rights.

How can I clear XP to accept the a reload of the updates?

For a clean re-download, you must empty your Temporary Internet Files first.
Control panel -> Internet Options -> button Delete Files -> check Delete all
offline content.

Or how can I find the updates and install them from my HD, that's if
they are there?

If your automatic downloads fail, you can download the complete SP2 (all
266MB of it!!) from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en
