Re: HP software or Uninstall KB908531?

Please understand that, until this is sorted out, I have not even
tried to install the April updates (I always wait)

Anyway, I do know this:

I have an HP3500c scanner... and there is a sub-folder, as you say,
under Share-to-web, and a program called "share-to-web" which brings
up some kind of setup wizard which I exit out of... I agree there is
no way to use add/remove to uninstall "share-to-web" only.

But...

There is a program that is supposed to run at start-up associated with
share-to-web...

A long time ago, I discovered it by running Start>run>msconfig and
clicking on the Start-Up tab... It is called "hpgs2wnd"... Since I
didn't even know what "share-to-web" was I unchecked this entry under
Start-up so it does not run in the background.... my scanner still
works fine...

So... I suspect if you uncheck "hpgs2wnd" in the Start-up list, that
may be equivalent to uninstalling the application...

Let me know what you think... I am still watching all of this before I
venture into installing these updates...

R.

Since the common culprit seems to be the HP software from what people are
saying(MS disputes this) I am hopeful someone has additional information
based on some the following details. It appears that even thought I have a
folder under program files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Sahre to Web I do not have
share to web running. No where in this folder or in add/remove programs is
there an UNINSTALL.

The only option I have off the start menu is to ru the Share to Web Wizard,
which apparently does the setup. The ONLY HP software listed under
add/remove programs is HP Photo & Imaging. When I select "change" it does
not allow of give any options for actually removing Share to Web. Which
leads me to believe it's not installed. Even though when I try to delete the
share to web folder under program files it states certain files are in use.

Has anyone else NOT seen a removalL option for Share to web and been
successful in uninstalling?

Thanks for any comments.

What has worked for me in the past is opening the program folder and locating
the uninstall file (ie something called *uninstall.exe - should be c:/program
files/hewlett packard and try to find an unistall file under HP Share to
Web). Alternatively right clicking the HP Share to Web icon and choosing
Properties should show you the file location. Try to find an uninstall file
there.
Also Start - All Programs - Hewlett Packed - Share to Web might show an
uninstall shortcut. Be carefull just to uninstall HP Share to Web.
If MS are suggesting just removing the update then the decision is entirely
up to you. Seems a pretty significant security update just to do without for
now in my estimation.

It's possible I could be loosing my mind but I DO NOT see HP Share to Web
anywhere in add/remove programs. Even after selecting "show updates". I
beleive someone else posted a similar issue stating they did not see it
either and inquired how does it get removed? In talking with MS it appears
they are suggesting remove the KB completly instead of indicating it could be
specific software

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Try ticking the "show updates" box at the top of Add or Remove Programs and
see if HP Share to Web shows up.

I have seen different posts and replies and I am hoping someone can clarify.
It appears that the HP share to Web software has been identified as the cause
of the problem with KB908531. Is this true?

I do see the HP SHARE to Web folder installed on my computer (with numerous
files) but I do NOT!! see it as part of Add/remove programs as was mentioned
in another post. This leads me to ask how do I uninstall the software? I
tried simply deleting the folder but it tells me certain DLLs are in use by
Windows. Which I do not see running in task manager.

Any information or help would be appreciated. MS is suggesting that
this KB be removed as there solution. I actually renamed the VERCLSID.EXE
rebooted and XP is working great again.

Any comments or thoughts?
Thanks so much.
