Thanks for posting the "fix". I've seen this issue many times when there's a need to reinstall XP after an HD fails.
Glad you got it sorted out. Nice work !

Lol microsoft make something appear to be what its not ! no way !! ;).
Actually all the logs including event viewer report success, there was'nt any malware.
i actually fixed it for her by slipstreaming her original cd with sp2 extracting the boot.img file
and burning it, tried it out on a virtual pc works fine.
initially she installed xp after hardrive failure, went directly to windows update and downloaded installed
every critical update up to and beyond sp1, and then went back and chose the express, and sp2 option.
Therein i believe lies the problem but why would it boot up into safe mode with service pack 2 but not
into a clean boot mode environment to the desktop? wierd probably all of those written over patched updates
instead of just service pack 2. but then again ive done that in 2004 worked fine.
Thanks again... problem solved by slipstreaming sp2 into xppro_en. "case closed bookum dano"

Why does sp2 take the "professional" out of the boot scren?
It does. As to the reasoning of why it does ... to make all XP's appear equal ? ;)
Have you checked for the presence of malware ?
Instead of sitting in front of the system for 45 minutes, suggest you gather the following logs and submit them to PSS :
1. Locate the Windows XP SP2 Setup log files. The Setup program logs information about the Windows XP SP2 installation to the following log files:
• Setupapi.log
• Svcpack.log
• Spuninst.log
The log files are located in the %Windir% folder. For example, if Windows XP is installed to the C:\Windows folder, the log files are located in the C:\Windows folder.
2. Use the System Information tool to gather information about the configuration of your computer. To do this:
a. Click Start, click Run, type msinfo32, and then click OK.
b. Click File, and then click Save.
c. In the Save As box, click Desktop to save the file to your desktop, specify a name for the file, and then click Save.
3. Collect the information that is logged in the application event log and to the system event log. To do this:
a. Click Start, click Run, type control admintools, and then click OK.
b. Double-click Event Viewer.
c. In the left pane, click Application.
d. Click Action, and then click Save Log File As.
e. In the Save "Application" As dialog box, click Desktop to save the file to your desktop, specify a name for the file, and then click Save.
f. In the left pane, click System.
g. Click Action, and then click Save Log File As.
h. In the Save "System" As dialog box, click Desktop to save the file to your desktop, specify a name for the file, and then click Save.

After letting window update download install sp2, it asks to restart,
after restarting, system hangs at new "without proffessional" boot screen.
waited 30 minutes, decided reboot into safe mode, booted fine, looked into event log, stated success in sp2 install, went to control panel, figured maybe change the way that security thing advises me but that option is greyed out, went into the services console and seen a sp2 boot thing "forget what it was precisely" changed the log on in that to log on as admin. retried booting normally but still hangs,
been doing this since last night so i rebooted into safe mode and uninstalled sp2 and here i am !!!!! thanks for putting up with me but im tired and cant figure out why its doing this, but i sure can duplicate it.? help please thanks
