Re: Installing SP3

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Hi Shenan,
thanks so much for your detailed explanation and guideline. i bought the
computer in Q1 2005. i will try to see if i can get the CDs from them. i
can't do much right now i guess. i will contact them to see if they are
willing to help. will see.

by the way, i just found out that the site told us to use this download
"OfficeXpSp3-kb832671-fullfile-enu" if we don't have access to CDs. i tried
it but then during the installation process, one dialogue box prompted and
said "the expected version of the product cannot be found in your system".
arhhh..... don't know what is going on? do you have any idea? if yes,
please kindly shed some light on this. much appreciated !!! thanks a
million.

btw, where are you from? i am from Hong Kong. nice to meet you and thanks
for your kind help and advice!!

Cheers,
Tony

Thank you indeed for your email. i understand from your reply.
but the thing is that the Office XP in my computer was installed by
the HP folks when i bought the computer set. hence, i don't have
the Office XP CDs at all, or Windows XP CDs at all.......because
they were all installed in the computer already. we were not given
the CDs.

so....i really don't know what to do. hope you can help me. many
thanks in advance. i think the SP3 is very important. i guess we
really need to install it. thanks!!

Unfortunately - if it came installed on the computer - that means those are
OEM versions. Support for those versions come first and foremost from the
manufacturer/seller. So you have to contact them and tell them your delimna
and try to get CDs for the applications you actually paid for sent to you.

They had to give you a way of restoring the system to the default state..
That may be an image on the hard disk drive or it may have been an image on
CDs/DVDs - I don't know - but part of their agreement with Microsoft when
selling you OEM software is to give the end-user (you) some way to restore
the system to the purchased state. You will need them to explain to you
this method as well and if it is not from CDs they provided at the time of
purchase - you should complain. You should try and get CDs for everything
installed when you bought the system.

The largest concern for me (for your situation) is the obvious age of the
system. It came with Office XP.... That means it must be 2 to 3 years in
age.. They may refuse to help you because your support contract has run
out.

SP3 for Office XP is an important update - to be sure. I don't know that it
is 100% critical.. After all, you have been running without it for two years
now - as SP3 for Office XP was released March 23, 2004.
