Kostas,

Show hidden files, folders, and system files :
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Navigate to the

Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition Updates folder

Delete the folder that contains the latest definition files. On my system it's name is {61BC2A63-68BA-4932-9FC8-5BF85A12645C}.
If you right click a similarly named one and choose Properties, then you can confirm the date of the definitions release ... the Created date of the latest definiton folder is March 10, 2006 on my system.
Close the Window.
Open Windows Defender. Click the down arrow next to the question mark, then click About Windows Defender.
Click the Check for Updates button.

Did that resolve the issue ?

Thanks, but I had already tried this. There is no log file produced (KBnnnnnn.log) and the update is not available (or didn't find the link) in the download section of microsoft in order to install it in safe mode. Other ideas?
