Re: Mine RESOLVED: Failed Updates -- and Norton Internet Security

Hello Joachim,

On a minor note: When the "freeze" happened, did you try to bring up Task Manager ? (CTRL+ALT+DEL) then close Iexplore?

Turn off Automatic Updates. Here's a quick way to do it.
from main Windows Start menu, select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter-key>

type in
net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>
EXIT <Enter-key>

Check to see what cipher-strength your IE browser supports. IE main menu, Help > About. Does it show 128-bit for Cipher Strength.

Let's have you download & re-install the MS Script Engine 5.6 (following link for XP & Win2000)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=C717D943-7E4B-4622-86EB-95A22B832CAA&displaylang=en

Go to this W U Troubleshooter page. Scroll down to "Scan for updates freezes or stops at 0%". Click down arrow to expand.
Try the other steps listed, except for getting new W U controls, since it looks like you already have them (plus this page is the way old V4 of Windows Update).

Try Windows Update (Microsoft Update) once more. If no joy, post back a copy of the last session in the Windows Update log.

Maurice,
first of all, I appreciate very much that you went to great trouble to
solve Glen's and my problems. Thank you.

I've checked the services (they are set as it should be) and the
entries under IE's advanced tab (had to un-check the "Check for server
certificate revocation" line), have added the URLs you posted in your
reply to Glen to the trusted sites, have registered wups2.dll
successfully.
I don't use Norton tools, acceleration tools or "tuning" programs. I
only ran Ad-Aware and two virus scanners before the following test to
be sure that no adware nor viruses or trojans are present. These
scanners were _not_ active when I went to the next step:

I visited the URL https://update.microsoft.com and was immediately
redirected to
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=de,
i.e., the non-SSL site (German version). It loaded very fast, as
always, and then offered the two known buttons Express and Custom.
Clicking on either of them caused the screen to immediately freeze;
the buttons keep appearing in the "pressed state". The status bar of
IE didn't show any message. The protocol in windowsupdate.log shows,
as far as I can see, no conspicious entries (kindly see below).
I could, as always, restart the machine only by using the reset
switch.

A strange fact is that I am using identical (nearly "mirrored")
settings on my laptop, and there KB892310 worked fine w/out any
problems.
If you or your colleagues have any further hints how to overcome this
freezing effect, please let Glen and me know.

Kind regards,
Joachim

Joachim,
See my answer to glen.

If you have the IE status bar ON (at bottom of browser) , you will
see the steps Windows Updates goes thru.
At IE browser's main menu, select View, then see if Status Bar is
checked. If not, then hover mouse over it, and click.

Use Windows Explorer, go to this folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32

see if you have wups2.dll

Let's be sure it is there, and registered.

Go to Windows Start menu - select Run and then type in the text
box next to "Open:"

regsvr32 wups2.dll <press enter or click OK button>

Also for IE browser, I. E. Tools >Internet Options > Advanced Tab
(scroll down thru the list)

These are "some" of the items that I do have CHECKed (selected):
Under HTTP 1.1 settings --
Use HTTP 1.1 (ON / Selected)
+ Enable / check to use HTTP 1.1 with proxy servers ****
<<----

and under Security :
Clear (un-check) the check box next to "Check for server
certificate revocation" . ( *OFF* )

Use SSL 2.0 (ON / selected)
Use SSL 3.0 (ON)

Click Apply changes, click ok.

Make sure you have not turned off the services I referred to in my
prior reply to Glen.
