Re: SP2 Update Problem

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hello Mel,
(I'm assuming you have the English edition of Win XP. If your XP is non-English, select the correct language at next page link).

The full file of SP2 is named "WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe". Is that the one you downloaded & then ran ?
If not, use that the next time you attempt to install XP service pack 2. It's at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

(N.B. This file alone is 266 MB in size ; plus you need at minimum 1 GB of free space on your Windows volume.)
If you do not have DSL or broadband internet access, then order the SP2 CD from Microsoft.

But FIRST, review the log; find the error(s) ; fix them.

Review the contents of the service pack log. C:\Windows\Svcpack.log or C:\WINNT\Svcpack.log
(post a copy of it here, as needed)

Review & try this first
"Access Denied" error when trying to install SP2

Take a look at this page, in the section "Access denied"

No, because IE always crashes on the WU website. I downloaded SP2 and

I fallowed your instructions precisely on preparing for an install.
The registry settings were already as you indicated they should be. I
then ran CMD and followed all the steps in #3, followed by cleaning
and scrubbing my system with the suggested security software. I found
some minor privacy issues, which I fixed. Next I followed the precise
instructions for a clean boot. Only MS apps and Zone Alarm were
running.

On installing SP2 all seemed to go OK, as before, untill I again
received the same error message: Access is denied. SP2 uninstalls
after hitting OK.

Anything else you can suggest trying? I appreciate your detailed
instructions. I was so sure I had it licked ...

Were you trying to get XP Service Pack 2 in the online Windows
Update website ?

Check on the update permissions as outline below in # 1 & 2. Do a
cleanup as in # 3.

Then follow suggestions on perparing for & getting SP2 as outlined
in following at Aumha.org: Windows Service Pack 2 FAQ at Aumha.org
http://aumha.org/win5/a/sp2faq.htm

Hello,

1. Click on Start, Run and type "REGEDIT" (w/o the quotes). The
Registry Editor will open.

*WARNING*

Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry
Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

2. Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate

On the upper menu, click on Edit, and select Permissions from the
drop-down list.

Give Administrator (And / Or System) Full Control and Read
permissions by checking the allow boxes. NOTE: In certain instances
these boxes are grayed out. Insure that all accounts have
appropriate permissions.

Click Apply, then OK.
Close the Registry Editor.

#3.

Next, from main Windows Start menu, select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter-key>

type in
net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>

Go to Windows Explorer.
Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows
folder name. Like Windows or WINNT. Modify following as appropriate.
If your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files
are stored from W U downloads.

Go back to Command prompt window.
type in
net start wuauserv <Enter-key>

EXIT <Enter-key>
