Your answer is very forthright and clear. I've gone back now and reread especially kb 890830. But your description is what I was looking for. Thank you. And thanks for how to find the log. dsg

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool helps remove specific, prevalent malicious software from computers that are running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000
Quote "Microsoft will release an updated version of this tool on the second Tuesday of each month."

It downloads the MRT.EXE to the Windows\System32 Folder and runs the file. It doesn't actually install itself.

Not intended to be a substitute for your anti virus software.

If downloaded via Windows Update, the tool runs in silent mode.
Locate the file named MRT.LOG in the ..\Windows\Debug folder.
Start/Run and type: notepad %windir%\Debug\Mrt.log
This file has the report of the scan.

1. Does Windows Update just deliver new 'dats' for the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool monthly, or does Windows Update actually perform a search and destroy procedure?

2. If it is the latter, what does Windows Update do about the system restore points?
