Is it possible for a SUS server to get it's downloads from a WSUS server?
While I cannot say for sure - my guess would be no.
Beyond that - I would consider updating to WSUS across the board.

Services changes in content

Especially the very first part:
-------
Important It is time to move to Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).
Software Update Services (SUS) 1.0 support time is running out. In addition
to the current capabilities in SUS 1.0, WSUS updates more than just Windows,
provides reporting capabilities, provides targeting capabilities, and gives
administrators more control over the update process. For more information
about WSUS, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Note This article applies only to releases on the Microsoft Windows Update
Web site. This article does not apply to security releases for products that
are not supported by Windows Update.
