I don't see any useful error message in your log file :-(
Manually access the Windows Update or Microsoft Update site via the Start
Menu. Under Options in the left sidebar, click on "Review your update
history". Look under the Status column for an icon denoting a Failed update
and click on one of the most recent Failed icons. Hopefully that will bring
up an Installation Failure window that will provide an error code. If so,
post the error code in a reply here.
The only other thread that I was involved in which no error code appeared in
the poster's log file was one where updates were hanging at the "Initializing
installation..." phase. This seemed to be due to an issue with Norton
Internet Security/Norton Personal Firewall. If you have either of those
products installed, perhaps take a look at this thread (it's from the DELL
forum) that I had recommended to that poster, as it solved his/her problem
with updates:

Hi steve,
What operating system are you using?
A look at the contents of the WindowsUpdate.log file might display an error
message that would assist in helping you find a resolution to the problem.
Take note of the date and time just prior to clicking on the prompt to
install the downloaded updates. Choose Custom install option and deselect
(uncheck) all but one or two updates before opting to Install. After the
install fails, Close the update window and open the WindowsUpdate.log file
(in C:\Windows folder or C:\WINNT folder, depending on your operating
system). Copy the entries in that file that match the date and time for
which you took note (they will be at the bottom of the log file). Paste the
entries into a reply here.

After being prompted to download updates at the bottom of my screen, I do so.
Then the prompt changes to install the downloaded update. After a short
time a window appears, saying: 'updates were unable to be successfully
installed'. No error message, no reason indicated. What does this mean?
