Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I've experienced over the past few weeks two rather similar problems which I
am beginning to think are related:
I get a Windows Installer error when I try to execute Word 2003.
I get a "patch package could not be opened" error when I try to install
or reinstall some software.
Many answers abound on this usenet, and I try to practice caution when
following some of the advice. After going over some of the fixes and
keeping tabs on the MS KB site, I'm coming to the conclusion that a series
of Registry errors must have occurred either when I installed some media
editing software or -- very possibly -- an automatic MS or Windows patch or
update or upgrade inadvertantly corrupted my registry.

One of the answers I'm thinking of following is the one that renames all the
PATCHES folders in the Registry and reinstalling Office 2003. The MS KB
also offers similar advice and provides a program that probably does the
same thing -- msicuu2.exe (Windows Installer Cleanup utility) --
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/229819 and
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;295823&spid=2488&sid=307.

The advantage of this program over the advice offered by another forum:

>2. click on Registry - Export and export the whole registry.

>5. Rename all folders called patches to patchesold
>6. press enter and F3 to continue searching.
>7. NOTE: DO NOT RENAME APPPATCHES files. Don't touch them.

is that the program allows you to choose which software may be affected so
that you're not faced with reinstalling all the software shown in the many,
many PATCHES folders, which is what I would assume would happen. However,
there is the other possibility that ALL that different software may have
problems that just haven't sufraced yet.
Also- this advice (given by Microsoft techies) was in summer, 2003. What
has transpired since then?
I'm looking for successful experiences from the MVPs.
