Huge results discrepency between Windows Update & Update Catalog?

My goal: To download post XP Service Pack 2 updates and security
related patches.

Background Information
I recently created a 2nd partition on my mom's laptop and installed a
2nd copy of Windows XP Home Edition on it (OEM version of XP Home). I
also installed service pack 2 on this partition as well. I did this
because my mom recently bought a whole bunch of very expensive brain
wave related software/hardware and I didn't want anti-virus software
etc. causing any problems for her.

After installing SP2, I turned off the Automatic Updates service and
connected to the Internet. I went directly to the "Microsoft Update"
web site and downloaded/installed the programs that are required in
order to get that web site to work properly. I also visted the "Windows
Update Catalog" web site and repeated the above process in order to get
that web site to work properly as well.

I clicked on the "Custom Install" link within the "Microsoft Update"
web site and it found a whole bunch of security updates (around 23 MB
worth). The search results that came back were exactly what I expected
to see.

Problem
I then went to the "Update Catalog" web site and did a search for ALL
available updates. The search results that came back did NOT contain
any of the security type of patches that the "Microsoft Update" site
had shown me. Note: I did click on the Advanced Search option just to
make sure that all of the checkboxes were checked off.

Here is a small sample of the "Microsoft Update" web site search
results:
Security Update for Windows XP (KB896424) ...
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP
(KB896688) ...

Here is a small sample of the "Update Catalog" web site search results
Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1 - (Posted Date: December 03, 2003)
....
Microsoft SharePoint Migration Tool - (Posted Date: September 30, 2003)
....

Does anyone know why all of the security patches are missing from my
"Update Catalog" search results?
