About installing the update with Antivirus disabled - how do you actually disable it ?
IIRC you can right-click on NAV's icon in systray (area to left of clock) and choose Disable.
I have read also in the bulletin that the 5.5 service pack 1 for windows ME
is replaced by this update? I tried reading the bulletin and really it
sounds like mumbo jumbo, no offense...
No, the bulletin (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-052.mspx) states that this update may and should be applied to IE5.5 SP2, the only IE version other than IE6 that's supported (...) in WinME.
Do you think I should download that service pack again or not worry about it?
Are you running IE5.5 SP1 or SP2? Most WinME users should have upgraded to IE6 SP1 years ago: Microsoft considers IE6 SP1 a Critical Update. See below.
If you could give me the link to the Windows Update Catalogue, that would be great.
See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;323166, which I'd encourage you to read before going to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp.
Andrew, if you're not running IE6 SP1 now, I encourage you to install it via Windows Update & reboot, then return to Windows Update for additional updates & patches you will then need.
NB: If you've ever installed IE6 and then reinstalled WinME without having first uninstalled IE6, ignore all of the above and post back telling us about this.

disable it ? ( I have Norton Antivirus 2005 and I've been looking in the
options menu to see where to disable it and don't see a clear command that
says that its disabled) I dont mean for this to be a silly question. And
with the other updates that I have downloaded before, I seem to recall not
having to disable it when downloading updates. I do agree with Marcus that
there should be an updated version of 896688 for users regardless if they're
98/ME users... I have followed your steps and for some reason, even this
morning when I tried to download, after downloading it, and I check again to
see if there are any updates to download, 896688 reappears so I'm not sure
what to make of this. I don't think my registry has something to do with
this but you never know. I'm being optimistic that this will be taken care
of in the right manner. I don't want to sound like a nuisance but this
update really needs to be fixed (poked/prodded) because I'd like to be able
to use WU and not have to worry bout seeing the same old update showing up
again and again. Again, I appreciate your insight/input/help.

Have you tried downloading 896688 via Windows Update Catalogue and installing it manually?
To assure a clean install of anything, including Windows Updates, your anti-virus application should be disabled and all other running processes closed before beginning the install. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Security, Shell/User)

i
went to bed thinking it was going to be fine... When I woke up this
morning,
got online to see the little blue Windows Update icon showed up on the
button bar(install reminder for KB896688) as well as when i loaded the
Windows Update screen, it showed the cumulative security update for
KB896688... Not sure what to do at this point. Like I said, even if i
click on the blue icon download update or on the Windows Update screen for
the update, it keeps showing that it has to be downloaded. I did some
reading and from what i read, people have said that the Automatic Update
has been having problems. Not sure if that's true but wouldn't be
surprised. I'm hoping as well as others that there will be a patch for
this or that Microsoft will delete the 896688 problem and have something
else to offer. If there's any other input you can offer or anybody else,
I'm all ears. Thanx

there's
a
patch or download or something that could help me out, I'd be curious.
Thanx again.
