No Malware......I clean it out regularly.
When you say "disable all the programs loading with Windows via
msconfig -> Autostart" you mean ALL the items in the 'startup'
menu.....including systray and scanreg?

To be honest, I think those experiments could make the situation only
worse.

Ehm, you mean, ActiveX controls don't work at all, right?

Okay. That's true for the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\...\Policies\Explorer key too,
right?

Then you have another issue which seems to be very -ehm- special.
Once again, disable *all* the programs loading with Windows via
msconfig -> Autostart.
Reboot.
Uninstall KB896688.
Reboot.
Let KB896688 download and install again via Windows Update.
Reboot.
Do *not* use any REG file and check, whether the "CLSID" keys are
present now or not.
And yes, please stop "playing around" trying to solve the problem yourself.
Otherwise any help attempt will definitly be condemned to fail. Since
nobody is sitting on your machine but you and nobody else is seeing what
you're doing and seeing on your system, there has to be a basis for those
trying to help. Provide as much information on your system and exact error
messages you're seeing and _when_ you're seeing them.
What's the exact error message?
I'm sure you're aware of http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/updt9xad.htm and
tried some of the suggestions. Which ones? Was http://tinyurl.com/aj76n
among those you've tried?
Can you definitly rule out any malware on your system?
Bye,
Freudi
