Is there any clues in the update log?
Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type %windir%\windowsupdate.log and then click OK.
Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s) associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install.

If necessary, copy and paste the error code into this thread and maybe someone can assist further or in the alternative, do a search of the Newsgroup to see if the error code is already mentioned.

I have recently (month ago) got a new computer, running Windows XP Home. I have set everything for firewall and security purposes and allowed automatic updates from Windows XP. After doing this I checked for updates in both Windows XP and Office 2000.
However everytime I try and install update KB 898461 itcomes back that the update failed. There is no other explanation. I have checked for the update and done all that was suggested to allow the update, clearing my history, all the temporary folders and the cache, all with no effect.
I realise that this is an important update, without which I am now behind in
the updates. Can anyone suggest what I do?
