Turning off the antivirus or other "monitoring" products is rather difficult
now with Microsoft Update and Windows Update automatic downloads and
installs of the patches and other updates.
Now, that being said, I have applied all the patches to 6 XP machines now,
2 Pro and 4 Home, with the antivirus software turned ON except for one
machine. All patches went OK except that I had to later totally uninstall
and reinstall the antivirus software on all of the machines. The AV portion
of the software failed to load but all other parts (spam filter, firewall,
etc.) loaded and functioned OK. (This also happened on one machine that I
had turned off the AV software prior to a manual update.) 5 of the machines
had Panda Platinum Internet Security and the 6th had McAfee AV only. Once
uninstalled and reinstalled everything worked great.
