Which update? Which OS? If you need help diagnosing this you need
to provide details.

E.g. if it was this one

<title>Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-038: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (896727)</title>
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS05-038.mspx

I'd suggest you look for KB896727.log and compare the versions
of the modules it would install versus what you actually have installed.

In case the log isn't clear about versions you could use the file manifest
in the security bulletin to supplement it. E.g. here is an extract from
some advice I gave a WinME user about this update:

<quote>
Expand the following sections to see the manifest:
[-] Security Update Information
[-] Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1...
</quote>

Users of other OS should obviously expand a different subsection
if appropriate.

Is the problem update listed in Add/Remove Programs?
In that case you might get some clues about your situation by trying
to uninstall it. In fact, it might even reinstall cleanly if it was uninstalled.
Etc.
