Hi there, I don't know about the slight burning smell whether it's affected your computer or not.
You seem to be having more trouble than just Windows Update. Perhaps we should look at spyware/malware and an online scan just to be sure the computer is absolutely clean.

The below links assist you in checking your system for parasites:-

Please note that some malware may kill the internet connection when it is removed, the program on the link below will enable you to regain the internet connection.

It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and scan performance optimizations.

I appreciate you getting back with me so soon. However, I went through what you told me. I opened C:\Windows\System32 & didn't see msconfig, regedit or taskmgr.com anywhere. There wasn't anything with .com. In C:\Windows, I found one regedit & right clicked it - properties - version tab-item name-oiriginal file name & it came up regedit.exe. I didn't find anything n msconfig & my taskmgr opens just fine. I even ran a search for all these files with .com and it didn't turn up anything either. I figured it might be a virus and installed Norton. It ran a system check for viruses before installing & didn't find anything, but unfortunately, it hasn't been able to open up since, there are few other programs recently installed that won't open either. I am curious, outside of this BITS continuous loop, I haven't experienced any problems until a couple of days ago when I noticed a slight burning smell. I knew it was coming from the computer. Ultimately found oiut it was the power source. Could lack of power cause any problems I'm having? I'm guessing No, but it couldn't hurt to ask.

Suggest you read this article: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ToolsQuit.htm Why does Task Manager, MSCONFIG, or REGEDIT disappear while opening?

find out if it's the problem is the msconfig, it opens only for a
split second. I reformatted a few weeks ago. Before that, I have
never had any problems getting updates. And I have never had to go
to anything in dos related stuff.
