I have 10 Windows 2003 servers, 10 XP workstations, and 10

to the windows update site and I can do updates. NONE of
the W2K servers can get to the “Express or Custom screen.

In all cases, I am getting error : 0x80072F78. This is the log:

Hi,

If you have Internet Explorer 6 SP1 installed, please try the following:

1)
Please put the part between the two
--------------------8<----------------------
lines below into a file that you give a .reg file extension.

Import the registry file by double clicking on it in Explorer,

--------------------8<---------------------- REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer]
"QFEInstalled"=dword:00000001

--------------------8<----------------------
(be sure to have a blank line at the end of the registry file)

This registry setting will have the effect that Cumulative Security
Updates for IE will install some additional IE hotfixes. More about
this here (see the reference to KB article 897225):

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896727

2) Uninstall MS05-038 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB896727) if it is installed (reboot after the uninstall).

To start the uninstall,, use Add/Remove Programs, or you can use this
command line from Start/Run:

%windir%\$NtUninstallKB896727-IE6SP1-20050719.165959$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

3) Install MS05-038/KB896727, you can download it from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=68300B15-1CF9-45FB-875E-2EF6D2FBC9ED&displaylang=en

Reboot the computer, and see if Windows Update works now.
