No sound

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

I am using Windows XP Home Edition and after I completed the update I no
longer have sound coming from my speakers.

I think it has to do with this update: C Media Electronics Incorporation -
Sound - C-Media AC97 Audio Device

I think to remove this update (it failed) I tried to undo changes by using
System Restore (that failed too)

When I try to use my Windows Media Player I get the following error:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with
your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your
computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be
functioning properly.

I think I might have made the original problem worse (thank you
Microsoft!!!!)
