I am having the exact same problem and my system ( software ) is virtually
identical to yours. Problem began Jul 29 after installation of "Windows
Genuine Advantage Validation Tool ( KB892130 )" and I've been checking from
time to time since for a fix.

I spoke to MS Tech Support yesterday and they suggested that I contact my
vendor. I promptly pointed out that my vendor's software download did not
disable Windows Update, Microsoft's did. I have been issued a case number and
will advise if I am able to resolve the provlem.
