I submit that the REAL answer is that Microsoft's servers are throttled and happened to be too busy to handle the download request. Thus the "regulation".
Wouldn't be surprised if that's the case, yes.
Instead of just quitting it should at least notify the user that "Servers are busy, download will continue in the background and you will be notified when complete. This might take several days!".

No, I did not go to Windows Update. Why should I? Are you admitting Auto Update doesn't work and I should not use it?
No, AU works fine and as it's been configured to work. I'm suggesting that if you did go to WU to install the updates, it would have put you at the "front of the line", so to speak. Everyone knows (or at least should by now) that it can sometimes take 2-3 days for everyone using Automatic Update to be pushed the updates. G-d knows how many new WinXP machines are going online every day and that only compounds the problem.
If you're impatient and justgottahaveitrightthisveryminute, well, go to Windows Update (and slow things down even more for everybody else).

Here are my answers to your questions. However, based on this experience I submit that the REAL answer is that Microsoft's servers are throttled and happened to be too busy to handle the download request. Thus the "regulation". But the Automatic update software is poorly programmed and just ends with no notice whatsoever leaving the user in the dark as to what is happening. Am I right?
It appears however (see below) to continue to attempt the download periodically and when it can get access completes the download and notifies the user it is ready for install.

1. Were you logged on as Administrator?

2. Did you try going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and installing the updates? Did you try again later?
me> Yes, I tried again later, and later, and later again. Same result. However, when I got up this morning without manually trying anything there was the little yellow shield and the updates were ready for install. Supporting my conclusion of SERVER CONGESTION.
