AUTOMATIC UPDATES Does not work Why?

-- My computer is set to update and install auto matically but it does not
do so and on Wednesday 10 August 2005 I had to down load and install
manually.
Can anyone suggest reasons for this? I use firefox as my default browser. I
have XP windows home edition
