Windows XP Update KB894391

I am a computer novice and struggle a lot with downloading, installing and
understanding software updates. I have just downloaded and installed the
subject update which relates to the "Generic Host Process Error" (whatever
that is!). I was notified that the installation was successful - but when I
check "Review Your Update History" this particular update is not listed among
the many automatic and MS Windows XP Web siteupdates that have been
installed in the last many months. I repeated the process several times with
the same apparent zero result. When I use the find feature to try to loczate
update KB894391 I can't find it anywhere on my computer.
It appears that the update was either not installed at all (despite the
notification to the contrary) or that I may have in fact installed it several
times. How can I determinine conclusively whether or not the update is
installed. If it has, have I created a problem by instal;ling it more than
once and if so, how do I get rid of the extra installations? Thank you
