Updates & Hotfix Questions (Clutter, etc.)

Alright, I feel like a fool for asking, but I'm trying to fix a problem on my
g/f's computer...
In the Add / Remove Programs window, there are a ton of enteries for
variously coded Hotfixes and Updates. There dosen't seem to be any problem
as far as computer performance goes, it just looks really cluttered, and
bieng a pretty anal user, I wonder if it might be a hassle in the future.
So...
Is there any way to remove these enteries from the window without
uninstalling them? Is my service pack out of date (I think it's 2.0, but it
might be 1.0b or something)? Is there an umbrella patch that can fix the
same problems? Are they nesseccary anyway? Sorry, I'm just sick of unwanted
clutter & automatically installed junk for programs I don't have / use.
.
