Automatic Updates - Desperate

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

My computer won't let me download windows updates. I get an error message
saying, "Automatic Updates has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience. Please tell Microsoft about this problem."
Then you hit this error message about 20 times before it finally goes off
the screen.
I have tried turning off Automatic Update; I tried a system restore but the
problem persists.
It is really getting annoying and I don't know how to remedy it.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
