Just to say... I had this problem and did all the troubleshooting tips on the
Microsoft help pages. Nothing worked. I'm using Norton Internet Security
(2005), and the problem finally resolved when I added the windows update site
to the 'trusted' sites list in Norton.
Here's the address I added: v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
....And I did that this way:
1. Open Norton Internet Security
2. Click the "Norton Internet Security" tab
3. Click the "Personal Firewall" tab, then the "configure" option.
4. Click the "Networking" tab
5. Choose the "Trusted" tab
6. Click "Add"
7. Type in the address above, (without using "http"; Norton is weird that
way).
May I add that I have never had to configure anything in Norton to download
updates before; and as a matter of fact, I recently downloaded updates with
no interference on May 17th of this year. Since that time, I did not fiddle
with any of Norton's settings. I have no idea why it should cause a problem
now, but I'm just happy that I finally found a working solution.
