Starting again with a 2 year old XP version. Updates question

Hi
I am forced to reset my PC to factory settings due to a corrupt hard drive.
I have followed the following steps:
- Reset to factory settings (This went fine - but should I have reinstalled
XP from the disc ?) I have XP service pack 1.
- Reinstalled my modem for broadband - fine
- Windows updates; the tricky part. First time I tried it it told me to
take 18 hi prio updates. Which seemed to work OK. Only after I took them
did it tell me to take service pack 2. I did this and it seemed to work but
when I tried to use the system the internet was really slow for the first few
minutes and then stopped altogether, even tho it connected OK. The funny
thing is, before I had to go back to scratch I had taken service pack 2 with
no issue. I also noted that it wouldnt shut down after installing SP2 - it
hung on "saving settings" and I had to do a hard reboot.
So, any help appreciated. specifically :
- Should I reinstall XP from disc rather than using the manufacturer
facility to revert to factory settings.
- Should I pick and choose from the 18 earlier updates or do them in a diff
order ?
- Is there a way to get service pack 2 witout doing the other 18 updates
first and should I try this ?
- Should I just take a few of the updates and perhaps even skip Service pack
2 ? will this cause probs later ?
- Anything else !!!
