Windows Update Problems

Have a query and I wondered whether you wonderful people can help me!! Since
a couple of weeks ago, I can't access Windows Updates at all. Everytime I try
to acess it, it brings up a blank white page with a message which says,
"Thank you for your interest in Windows Update. Windows Update is the online
extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer. You
must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use Windows
Update"

I have a completely legit and registered version of XP and even went through
and validated my product again and this confirmed it was legit. I was still
on Service Pack 1 and thought that may be the problem so loaded Service Pack
2. Had no other problems with that, thank god!, but it still won't let me
into Windows Update and comes up with the same message.

Someone said that I might have a virus, (wmmon.exe), or a trojan on my
system. I am running Norton Internet Security and this has never picked
anything up. Ran Ad-Aware, Spybot, Norton Anti Virus, Hijack This, AVG 7 and
CCleaner, but, again, nothing is picked up. I'm happy to stay with Norton so
not looking to move to anything else or move from Internet Explorer but
wondered whether anyone had any ideas or has had anything similar and knew
how to fix this? I read that some firewall's can block access but I used to
be able to get into the updates when I first got the Internet Security
Program so this never used to be a problem until now. Not changed any
settings on it either!

What is strange is that when I try and access Hotmail. It also says that I
need to download Internet Explorer. It's as though my PC isn't running it at
all when it quite clearly is. In fact, in Internet Explorer, if I click on
Help and 'About Internet Explorer', it says that I'm running version
'6.9.2000.2180.xpsp_sp_gdr.050301-1519' - (in case that means anything to
anyone!!)

It's annoying and worrying at the same time! Completely stumped now so any
help would be appreciated!

Thanks all.
