Virus protection out of date

I get a message from Symatec saying that my virus protection is out of date -
about once a minute, and I can't seem to turn it off. I use AVG, and don't
really want to use Norton, but it came w/my computer and I've tried
uninstalling it, but it keeps coming back! I've gone to the Windows Security
Center and selected "change the way Security Center alerts me" and unchecked
the boxes for that say alert me w/ regards to my virus protection settings
and hit "OK", but then less than a minute later, the message comes up and
when I go back to the Windows security center, the boxes are checked again.
What is happening? Why can't I gain control over my computer?
