Thanks Charles, however it didn't work. Same as the solution for this error
as recommended by MS didn't work.

Oli, what DID work for me was THIS:

Open services.msc Go to " Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator". If you
have disabled it as I had (because it is said to be a potential security risk
as mentioned in numerous places on the web), right click on it, go to
'Properties', change to 'manual' and Apply that.

Now Update works again. Microsoft should amend its help screens as it isn't
just those services it mentions!!
