"Mike",
I'm sorry you are encountering this issue. I realize that things were working
before the installation of this update, but the problem is one of two possible
things:
1. The proxy server settings on each client, for the service and not the browser
2. The proxy server settings for client download
Let's try the first one first, and then we'll work on the other one if you
report back that it did not work:
Using one Windows XP machine that is experiencing this issue:
1. Close all Internet browser windows, no matter what flavor, but maintain
connection to the Internet.
2. Close all programs except for antivirus and Internet security software.
3. Open a single Internet Explorer window and verify that you can browse web
pages on the Internet.
4. In the Internet Explorer window, on the Menu bar, click Tools
5. Click Internet Options
6. Click on the Connections tab
7. Click the LAN Settings button
8. In the Proxy server section, is the checkbox for "Use a proxy server..."
checked? If so, is there a valid server name for the proxy server listed and a
valid port number for the HTTP protocol on your network? If so, verify that in
the Automatic configuration section, that the "Automatically detect settings" is
Unchecked and skip to step 11.
9. If the "Use a proxy server" is Unchecked, then verify that in the Automatic
configuration section the "Automatically detect settings" is checked, and skip
to step 11.
10. If the "Use a proxy server" is checked, but an invalid name is entered in
the Address: field, contact your IT staff to ask for the name of the server and
the right port number. Enter those values if given. If told to "set it to
automatically detect," then uncheck the "Use a proxy server" and skip back to
step 9.
11. Click OK to exit the LAN Settings, and click OK again to set Internet
Explorer.
12. Click Start
13. Click Run
14. Type: cmd
15. In the Command Prompt, type: proxycfg -d <Enter> <--This will clear the
proxy cache and set it to direct access.
16. Type: proxycfg -u <Enter> <-- This will set the proxy settings for the
service to the same settings as Internet Explorer.
17. Type: net stop wuauserv <Enter>
18. Type: net stop bits <Enter>
19. Type: net start bits <Enter>
20. Type: net start wuauserv <Enter>
21. Type exit <Enter> <-- This will close the Command Prompt
22. In the Internet Explorer window again, click Tools
23. Click Windows Update
Try to install a single update and let us know how that goes.
Sincerely,
Pat Walters [MSFT]
