Windows Update Hangs

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

My system is XP Pro SP2.

Recently, the fan on the power supply went out, the system detected an
overheat situation and shut down. As far as I know, the only thing going on
at the time was a full system virus scan.

I did not recognize the power supply problem immediately, and restarted the
system the next day. From this point forward, I have been unable to shut
the system down. It reports that updates are being installed, and the
system will shut down when the updates are completed. Well, the updates
never do get applied, and the system just sites there.

The next day, I realized that the power supply fan was shot and the cabinet
was getting warm. I replaced the power supply, and rebooted the system.
When the system booted, the clock was wrong by 3 years. This caused almost
everything in my start menu to show up as newly installed programs.

I reset the clock, and now I'm back to the "unable to install updates"
problem.

QUESTION: is there some way to delete the updates that are scheduled to be
installed, so the system can redetect them? Is there any repair I can do on
the automatic update registry entries, or something to clear this situation?

ALSO: I tried to use system restore to take the system back to a prior
checkpoint, and that hung as well. I'm not sure if these are related
technologies that relie on some common settings, or if this is two separate
problems suggesting some other type of problem.

Thanks,
Michael Giroux
