Recent media driver - Advent 3418 /Trigem IT865GE /C-Media 9739A A

Hi, does anyone know what the recent media driver pushed out via Windows
update was? I did not pay close attention to a suggested download and, hey
presto, all sounds vanished on reboot. Also I think I saw a Via Technologies
header, but have had total brain fade since.
All drivers appear to be up to date, there are no indicated conflicts, but I
get no system sounds and get led to a C00D11BA: Cannot play the file message.
All help gratefully received.
