Check.

I should have been more clear; v5 also crashes the browser window. I only
meant to say that I had also tried v4 even though it wasn't the proper site
to use.

When I go to any of the sites (v4, v5, windowsupdate.microsoft.com) the page
name transitions but the browser window crashes: if I click to another
program, etc, then go back, nothing appears except the top bar and the
status bar (completely empty). The buttons are not redrawn. The task
manager does not show IE as "not responding". Error info:

szAppName : iexplore.exe szAppVer : 6.0.2900.2180 szModName : hungapp
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

and

C:\DOCUME~1\Rebecca\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERb2d0.dir00\iexplore.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Rebecca\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERb2d0.dir00\appcompat.txt

There is no redirecting. I followed what you said above but no address ever
came up but windowsupdate.microsoft.com. I see that the bottom left says
local intranet, which seems rather odd. That was only visible until I
clicked to another program.

No prompts ever came up.

As mentioned before, neither.

Is there a list of files that I ought to have? (iudent, etc) And where
they should be? Do I need to reinstall XP or IE (is that even possible for
IE)?
