On XP Pro SP2, with McAfee antivirus and the Windows Firewall turned off and
the relevant destinations in my trusted sites, I am still getting 80072F0D
when Automatic Update attempts to download files. I can navigate to the
Microsoft download site and manually download and install most updates
(except third party drivers) but its pretty painful.

80072F0D appears to something to do with certificates. Most posts about it
seem to involve MSN Messenger. I have applied the suggested fix for
messenger (which involves reregistering a number of DLLs without success). I
don't use MSN Messenger so I have no idea whether that gives the same error.

Its quite likely I introduced the problem either by installing a piece of
3rd party software or by accidentally removing a certificate. Any assistance
much appreciated.
