I have seen this happen before, and it happened to me again today. Both times
were on a big patch day, so I think it may have to do with Windows Update
being busy.

Here's what worked for me: Go to the Windows Update web site and install the
updates from there. When they finish downloading, Automatic Update may
suddenly come back to life and offer to install the updates (which you've
already started to install from the web site). Continue installing from the
Windows Update web site and ignore the other install dialog from the "little
yellow shield".
