Never having used the automatic update in Win98, I am just guessing
here but try these in the order below.
1. Try disabling it in the Task Scheduler.
2. Try disabling it in Msconfig
(Start-Run-MSCONFIG-Startup tab)
3. See if there is an entry in Control Panel-Add/Remove
