I tried and that specific job finished transferring. Of the other 5 jobs, 3
vanished upon /RESUME and 2 threw errors about not finding files. I tried
doing BITSADMIN /COMPLETE on the one job that finished transferring, thinking
this would install the update. That job left the list, though I have no idea
what /COMPLETE did, if anything. I got frustrated at this point and did
BITSADMIN /CANCEL to the two remaining (file not found) jobs on the list.

I gave up on AU via the systray yesterday when I was sick of the icon going
in and out of existence while update.exe flickered on and off in the task
manager. AutoUpdate via the systray has been off and I've been using
WindowsUpdate.com via IE so that I can see some kind of feedback.

I didn't know what logs you were referring to, sorry. I don't know very much
about debugging Windows.

OK, after doing BITSADMIN /CANCEL to all jobs, following the instructions
under WU troubleshooter 0x80248013, which called for me to delete the
contents of WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore and
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download and also stop Automatic Updates via
services.msc, I made a visit to windowsupate.com once again. Here is the
complete contents of WindowsUpdate.log from when (I think) I opened an IE
window, connected to windowsupdate.com, selected "express install", observed
the 4 files would be 1.6MB total, clicked install, watched the download
window start downloading the first update, and then watched it go into its
usual loop of "Downloading x MB of x MB" ... "Verifying Download" and back
again, as the first update climbed in apparent size to 2 MB, at which point I
cancelled the update and closed the IE window.

The log may start by overlapping a bit with cancelling a previous download
and re-shutting down Automatic Updates:
