Hi Ralph - You've got such version soup that I don't quite know quite where
to begin. It's perhaps best to just start fresh. Do the following:
1. Go to Add-Remove Programs and uninstall ALL versions of Java shown,
rebooting after each uninstall. Then go to Program Files|Java and delete
ALL sub-folders
2. Go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp and download JRE
5.0 Update 1 includes the JVM technology Download JRE here:
http://javashoplm.sun.com/ECom/docs/Welcome.jsp?StoreId=22&PartDetailId=jre-1.5.0_01-oth-JPR&SiteId=JSC&TransactionId=noreg
Follow the links, Accept and eventually download Windows Offline
Installation, Multi-language (jre-1_5_0_01-windows-i586-p.exe, 15.08 MB)
You'll find installation instructions here which you might want to look at:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/install.html
3. Disable (or even better Permanently Uninstall - sorry, just my personal
prejudice sticking up its ugly head) ALL Norton/Symantec Software of ANY
KIND. (It's notorious for interfering with other software installs,
especially System Software installs.) Disable as much other running
software as possible. You may want to disconnect from the Internet before
disabling any Norton firewall unless you replace it with the XP firewall or
some other such as Zone Alarm, etc. which would be OK to leave active - just
NOT Norton/Symantec active during the install.
4. Install the software you just downloaded. Reboot when you've finished
the install.
5. Reenable/replace any firewall/AV software you've disabled and ONLY THEN
reconnect to the Internet, if necessary.
6. Go to IE6, Tools|Internet Options|Advanced or Control Panel|Internet
Options|Advanced. Be sure that the Java Sun box is checked and that ONLY
the JIT box under Microsoft VM is checked. It should read "Use Java 2
v1.5.0_01 for <applet> (requires restart)"
7. Now go back to all of the test sites I gave you and report back what you
get at each, please. :)
