for Jim Byrd

When I test whether Java is working at WWWw.pocoso.de...,
WWW.fitwise.com..., and
http//coglab.wadsworth.com.... I receive the following message:

Java(TM) Plug-in 1.4 Fatal Error
Java Plug-in 1.3.1_01 cannot be located because values in the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Plug-in\1.3.1_01 is not found or
is no longer valid.

A test to see 'if the JVR is working on your computer' fails at the web site
www.javatester.org/enabled.html.

But when I run the test at www.dancespots.net/browsertest.htm I receive the
following:

           Java Script version 1.5
           Java Script enabled passed
           cookies enabled passed
           supported browser passed
           CSS enabled passed

I am running Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP service pack 2. I
did
install software which included Java 2 SDK Standard Edition v1.3.1_04. (
During the
installation of that software, I accepted 'Jave Plug-in will be the default
Java runtime for Microsoft Internet Explorer').

I also have Norton Security and GhostSurf installed. But I have
never had a
problem accessing software on my computer - as far as Active X issues are
concerned. I
just get a warning message asking if I want to allow Active X material. I
say yes and
the material appears. Although I have changed settings on my GhostSurf, I
still receive
the Java Plug-in 1.4 Fatal Error when accessing the web sites listed at the
top. My
Ad-aware software is reporting no problems.

For all of my installed software, the help function works fine. But there
are two
softwares for which the search function (within the help function) don't
work. When
trying to access the search function in these two cases I receive the same
Java(TM) Plug-in
1.4 Fatal Error message.

I have checked the following settings to ensure that Java is configured.

        1. Enable the Sun Java Virtual Machine
             Start>Control Panel>Java Plug-in 1.3.1_04 ( and I can see the coffee
cup icon )
and under the Basic tab it reads with check-marks
Enable Java Plug-in, Show Java Console and Recycle
Classloader
and under the Advanced tab, it reads with a check-mark
                     Enable Just-In-Time Compiler
and under the Browser tab it reads with a check-mark
                     Microsoft Internet Explorer

        2. Browser Settings

             a) Enable Java in your browser

                 Tools>Internet options
                 Select the Security tab.
                 Click the Custom Level button.
Scroll down to Java Permissions and choose either Low,
Medium or High safety
Click OK. The Internet Options screen appears.
                 Click OK.

             b) Tools>Internet options
                 Select the Advanced tab.
under the Java (Sun), the box is checked for 'Use Java 2 v
1.3.1_04...'
and under the Microsoft VM I have checked the boxes:
                    Java Console enabled , and
JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled

             c) Enable Javascript

Internet Explorer Select Tools then choose Internet Options.
                 The Internet Options screen appears.
                 Select the Security tab.
Click the Custom Level button. The Security Settings screen
appears.
Scroll down to Scripting, and enable Active Scripting and
Scripting of Java Applets.
Click OK. The Internet Options screen appears.
                 Click OK

After doing these checks, I'm not sure why I am still getting the
'Java(TM) Plug-in 1.4 Fatal Error'
when i) I visit the web sites listed at the very top, and
ii) when trying to access the search function in two of my software.

When I run the Dos command jview I receive: JavaVersion 5.00.3810

The following is from my registry:

        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>JavaSoft>Java Plug-in>1.3.1_04

        (default) REG_SZ (value not set)
        Java Home REG_SZ C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1_04
        UseJava2IExplorer REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)

I noticed that in the above JavaSoft folder there are two other folders.
They
are 'Java Development Kit' and 'Java Runtime Environment'. In each of
these are
two sub folders called 1.3 and 1.3.1_04. The Java Plug-in
folder only has the 1.3.1_04 sub folder.

Once I sorted that out, I could not find an elegant way to turn off gcj; my first inclination was to remove it, but, that led to a request to delete about 25 other packages from my machine for dependencies - I stopped that. ... Then I tried to remove the plug-in from Mozilla - creating the linked file to the java, as suggested by one of the commands on that linked page, had already produced a message that the file existed, so I suppose that libjavaplugin_oji.so was being used by gcj; I renamed that file and then ran the link command again - that appeared to be successful and produced the appearance of Sun Java in the plug-in list in Firefox; but, the gcj plug-in was still there, and attempts to use the ATT Relay site continued to fail; then I renamed a second plug-in in the mozilla plug-in folder called libjavaplugin.so - that didn't work, because it was simply a link to another *.so file somewhere I suppose, so gcj continued to appear in my plug-in list in Firefox - finally, I just created a folder inside the Mozilla plug-in folder called 'old' and moved the now renamed files 'libjavaplugin_oji.so.gcj' and 'libjavaplugin.so.gcj' to this folder, and that finally solved the problem. ...
