I had the same problem (perhaps with a different set of updates), and
just stopping and starting the Automatic Update service (without
deleting the container contents in between) fixed it (or at least it
started to work after, having failed multiple times before). So for
future people with the same problem, it's probably worth trying that
before going all the way and deleting the container contents,
reinstalling Windows, buying a new computer *8) etc...
