"angiedmann",

I am sorry you are running into this issue. I will try to
help you. I have installed XP SP2 many times without
taking any precautions at all, so please do not despair.

The uninstall of the SP2 apparently did not work. Windows
XP Service Pack 2 gives you an option at the beginning of
the install asking if you wish to backup your current
installation so that you could uninstall SP2 in the
future. To minimize the trouble you are having, choose
the "Do not backup" option.

The installation should proceed normally. Please let us
know either way what happens with your XP SP2 installation
and I will be checking if you need any further assistance.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]
